Pope Leo XIV speaking in Cameroon during his Africa visit

Pope Tells Africans: Stay Home

A Pope Message In Cameroon

Speaking to students and faculty at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaounde, Pope Leo XIV told young Africans that the easier path is not always the wiser one. He urged them to stay, serve their countries, and put the education they are earning to work at home. That is not the kind of speech that makes border activists clap on cue, which may be why it sounded so rare. Leo said the dream of a better life elsewhere is understandable, but he pointed toward duty, local growth, and civic responsibility instead of the usual escape hatch.

What He Said About Migration

Leo added that a nation’s greatness cannot be measured only by natural resources or the size of its institutions. He said society cannot flourish unless it is grounded in upright consciences formed in truth. That line will not fit neatly on a campaign poster, but it does cut through a lot of public relations fog. The numbers behind the migration debate are large enough already. Roughly 11 million African migrants live in Europe, and many came through dangerous and illegal routes from North Africa. The United States also hosts about 2.5 million African-born migrants, with more arriving in recent years through the southern border. The facts are plain, even when the talking points are not.

Trump, The Vatican, And The Off-Ramp

Leo’s Africa visit comes with the usual side order of political noise. President Donald Trump recently criticized the pope over crime and foreign policy, and Leo also drew fire for earlier comments on the Iran crisis. Still, the pope tried to lower the temperature. He said he would not enter into debate and that his remarks were not attacks on anyone. He also said he would keep speaking about the Gospel, peace, and reconciliation. In a media culture that treats every calm sentence like a threat, that may be the most unusual part of all.
