New work, new target
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was reopened earlier this month after a renovation that gave the basin a cleaner look and a glasslike reflection. The source material says the project began in April and finished faster and at lower cost than the 2012 repairs, which ran $34 million and took nearly two years. Even a public landmark cannot enjoy a quiet comeback without someone trying to turn it into a grievance wall.
A man went into the pool
Independent journalist Emily Miller said a man jumped into the pool and cut out a “huge piece” of the blue sealant that was helping keep the water looking blue. Miller also said another man was detained after he grabbed a hose that National Park Service workers were using to clear algae. Bureaucracy usually moves at the speed of wet cement, but vandalism always seems to find the fast lane.
Park Police look at the message
U.S. Park Police are also investigating an “86 47” inscription found on the sealant, according to Nick Sortor. The phrase has been treated as a threat against the 47th president, and similar markings were reported on the National Mall last week. It is a reminder that public spaces now need cameras, crews, and cops just to keep the decorative surfaces from becoming political graffiti.
