A Walk Near Camp Turned Dangerous

A man was seriously injured Friday evening at Yellowstone National Park after a bull bison charged and tossed him about eight feet into the air, according to Cowboy State Daily. The incident happened at Bridge Bay Campground, south of Fishing Bridge. Professional photographer Mike MacLeod of Bozeman, Montana, said he saw the scene unfold while he was filming the agitated animal. MacLeod said the man had been walking with his grandson and was not even in the same camping loop as the bison when the animal started running toward them. In other words, this was not a petting zoo misunderstanding. It was a wild animal making its point with the subtle touch of a small truck.

The Video Shows How Fast Distance Disappears

The video is about a minute long and has no audio, but it does not need narration from a public safety committee to make the point. MacLeod told Cowboy State Daily he had been trying to capture footage of the bison “having a fit,” and the animal’s behavior changed his view of what to expect from bison at this time of year. He said the bison had been running through the campground while people shouted warnings to one another. After a while, the animal found a patch of dirt and began wallowing. Then the victim appeared nearby, apparently unaware of how quickly the situation could turn. The National Park Service had not released information on the incident at the time of the report.

Yellowstone’s Warnings Are Not Decorative

Yellowstone officials regularly warn visitors to keep far away from bison and other wildlife, and this incident is a rough reminder that those signs are not there for rustic charm. Bison are huge, fast, unpredictable animals, not background props for vacation photos. They can look calm one moment and charge the next, which is why “I thought I was far enough away” is not much of a safety plan. The man in this case was reportedly trying to keep distance, but the animal closed the gap anyway. That is the part tourists, park planners, and anyone holding a phone should remember. Nature does not pause for better lighting, and the bison does not care about your itinerary.
