A video shared by Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota presents itself as a breezy bit of lake-country relaxation. Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, stroll around a deck while she captions the post, “Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes.” The scene is polished, peaceful, and almost aggressively serene. Then there is the soundtrack, which is where the mood takes a hard turn.
The Washington Free Beacon translated the Somali rap song playing over the clip. According to that translation, the lyrics say, “The almighty has given me strength. If I confront you in the afternoon, by evening, I will teach you a lesson and keep you awake throughout the night. Yes, you will suffer and cry in seething. You will scream like a demon.” That is not exactly the audio equivalent of birds chirping over a family picnic.
Other translated lines are even more confrontational: “After all, you are not Arabs, So swallow your anger and chew on it,” followed by, “Let me show you who I am. No enemy dares to threaten me.” The song continues, “Let the enemies die of seething. We are the ones who rule this land.” The lyrics are jarring in a video posted by a sitting member of Congress, particularly while Omar is facing public scrutiny over allegations involving her immigration status, her name, an alleged marriage to her brother, and financial irregularities on her disclosures.
The song is titled “Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya.” It was performed by Somali rapper Ilkacase Qays and singer Hodan Abdirahman. The source report noted that Omar is currently the target of a federal investigation into potential immigration fraud, citing The Washington Free Beacon. The lyrics themselves do not prove who selected the song or what Omar intended by posting the clip. They do, however, explain why the soundtrack has drawn attention rather than being ignored as background noise.
Another part of the controversy reaches back to 2019. As questions about Omar’s marriage and immigration status gained traction, she deleted a social media post that referred to her father by a different name, according to the report. Fox News reported that Omar wrote in June 2013, “Happy Father’s Day to my aabo Nur Said, I am forever grateful to Allah for giving me the best father.”
“Nur Said” is similar to the name of Omar’s ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Mohammad Tawhidi, identified in the source as the “Imam of Peace,” shared a link to the older post on Sept. 17, 2019, days before it was deleted, according to Alpha News. Tawhidi wrote, “Your father is Nur Said? Not: Nur Omar Mohamed? So you’re Ilhan Nur Said? And you married Ahmed Nur Said,” followed by, “You married your brother,” and a parenthetical explanation that “Most Americans don’t know that in most Muslim countries, the surname is actually the father’s name.”
That post and the translated lyrics are separate pieces of the broader controversy, and both remain claims reported by the outlets cited in the source. The social media clip may have been intended as a casual Minnesota lakeside moment, but the words playing underneath it have ensured that viewers are discussing something far less relaxing.
