Senate Majority Leader John Thune answered the Republican Party’s heavy losses in the 2026 midterms with a statement that sounded less like an election autopsy and more like a campaign brochure. Democrats secured control of the Senate, captured the House, and delivered a major setback to President Trump’s congressional agenda. Thune, however, chose the moment for a victory lap.

The criticism came quickly. Conservative commentator Mike Cernovich, election-integrity attorney Cleta Mitchell, and other prominent voices accused Thune of failing to advance President Trump’s legislative priorities while Republicans controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress. The SAVE America Act was a particular sore spot. Apparently, having the votes and the gavels was not enough to get the job done, which is an awkward detail to leave out of a celebratory statement.

Thune defended his record in a lengthy post on X, writing: “Over the last two years, Senate Republicans have put up a strong record of accomplishment that’s created safer streets, more money in Americans’ pockets, and new opportunities for families and businesses to get ahead. After fighting Democrat obstruction at every turn, we prevented the largest tax hike in American history, secured our border in an unprecedented way, confirmed the president’s Cabinet at the fastest pace in two decades, and put strong conservative judges on benches across the country faster than we have since the Reagan administration. I’m proud of our team and everything we’ve done for the American people, and I’m looking forward to the important work we have in front of us over the next few months. As we head into 2027, Senate Republicans will not stand idly by as the far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party attempts to unwind everything we’ve done. Thankfully, we still have President Trump in the White House, and we’ll work with him to stop the worst impulses of Democrat extremism. We cannot let their fringe positions become the mainstream.”

That is a polished defense, but the timing made it an easy target. Democrats flipped at least seven Republican-held Senate seats, including victories in Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The Democratic Party also took the House. Celebrating the record immediately after losing control of Congress was never going to receive a warm standing ovation from Republican critics.

Cernovich’s response was blunt, even by internet standards. He wrote: “Abolish the filibuster, pass the SAVE Act. End blue slips. Confirm judges. Go into recess, Trump makes appointments.”

He then delivered the personal insult that quickly became the most memorable line of the online backlash: “You are a demon inside a human skin suit.”

Another conservative X user, Bad Hombre, similarly criticized Thune over the failure to advance Republican priorities. Cleta Mitchell was also among the prominent voices identified as objecting to Thune’s handling of the Senate’s Republican majority. The complaints all pointed in the same direction, namely that control of Congress was supposed to produce action, not simply another press release praising the people in charge.

Thune’s statement promises that Senate Republicans will fight the Democrats in 2027, but critics are focused on what happened when Republicans already held the power to move President Trump’s agenda. The argument is no longer about whether the language sounded confident. It is about whether the confidence was earned, and after an election night like this, conservatives clearly did not think the answer was yes.
