Tulsi Gabbard and Abraham Williams in an emotional health update video

WATCH: Tulsi Gabbard Shares Emotional Update on Husband’s Rare Bone Cancer Battle

Gabbard Shares a Personal Health Update

Former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard shared a deeply personal update Thursday about her husband, Abraham Williams, and his fight with a rare form of bone cancer. In a video posted online, Gabbard said Abraham was diagnosed earlier this year with sacral chordoma, a cancerous tumor that develops near the base of the spine. She wrote that the news has been hard to discuss, but many people had reached out with prayers and well wishes, so they chose to share more about his condition and recovery.

A Rare Diagnosis and a Difficult Choice

According to Gabbard, the couple faced a serious decision after the diagnosis. Abraham could undergo extremely invasive surgery to remove the bottom part of his sacrum and tailbone, or he could receive radiation. They chose surgery and moved quickly. The operation lasted nearly eight hours under heavy anesthesia. Gabbard described the immediate aftermath as frightening, as Abraham’s body reacted to the drugs. Even so, she said he refused narcotic pain medication that same night and insisted on getting up and walking, despite vomiting as he tried to move.

Recovery Brings Hope, but Monitoring Continues

Gabbard said the weeks after surgery brought encouraging news. Pathologists and doctors told them they were confident they had removed all the cancerous bone and tissue. Nearly three months later, Abraham is in rigorous physical therapy. Gabbard said he sometimes gets frustrated because he wants to recover faster and can push himself too hard, but she also said he is “progressing very well.” She added that the battle is not over, noting that he will need frequent MRIs to watch for any sign that the cancer has returned in the same area or elsewhere in his body.

Faith, Family, and Her Resignation from Public Office

The video ended with an emotional moment between the couple, as Abraham told Gabbard, “Love you, darlin’,” and she answered, “I love you.” Gabbard also thanked God “for his unconditional love, for being our shelter, for being our peace and our strength.” The update follows her resignation in late May as President Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, a move she said allowed her to stand by Abraham during his treatment. In her resignation letter, she called him her “rock” through deployments, campaigns, and public service. President Trump praised her work, saying she had done “an incredible job” and that she “rightfully” wanted to be with her husband.
