Trump’s Order Puts an End to Student Loan Forgiveness Abuse
Joe Biden set up a program that forgives some or all student loans for those in public service. Sounds great, right? Well, not exactly.
The left turned this into a loophole. They discovered that working for any non-profit meant you could call it public service. Democrats never cracked down on it. They assume all non-profits are noble, but that’s not the case.
Enter President Trump. His new executive order draws a hard line. Now, only those who truly work in genuine public service qualify. Trump’s order is clear and direct.
The Hill reports:
Trump signs executive order limiting eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness
President Trump signed an executive order on Friday to exclude nonprofits that he says engage in “the subsidization of illegal activities” from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). The executive order states “individuals employed by organizations whose activities have a substantial illegal purpose shall not be eligible for public service loan forgiveness.” PSLF is a student loan program that lets those in government positions such as police or teachers, along with those working with nonprofits, to receive debt forgiveness after making 10 years of consecutive payments. “Instead of alleviating worker shortages in necessary occupations, the PSLF Program has misdirected tax dollars into activist organizations that not only fail to serve the public interest, but actually harm our national security and American values, sometimes through criminal means,” the executive order reads… A Trump staffer said “the problem” with the loan program is that some nonprofit employees work at organizations “that engage in illegal, or what we would consider to be improper activities supporting, for example, illegal immigration or foreign terrorist organizations or otherwise law breaking activities.”
Trump’s move is a shot across the bow. It forces a reality check. If you work for an organization that breaks the law, you shouldn’t get a free ride.
The truth is simple. People who take out student loans should repay them. That’s how it works everywhere else. No freebies for those who dodge responsibility.
We might need to toss out the entire program eventually, but this order is a solid first step. It cuts through the nonsense and defends American values.
