White House Pulls the Nomination
President Donald Trump abruptly withdrew his nominee for ICE director on Thursday. Fox News reported that the White House notified the Senate it was pulling Schroyer’s nomination after the pick stalled. The move ends the latest attempt to fill a job that has lacked a Senate-confirmed director for 11 years. Schroyer had been expected to replace Acting ICE Director Dave Venturella. The basic Washington lesson is familiar: even a nomination tied to a major public-safety agency can spend more time navigating the Senate than moving toward a vote.
Trump’s Case for Schroyer
Trump announced in June that he had nominated Lance Schroyer. The nominee is a former Oklahoma State Trooper and United States Marine. He also previously served on Senator Markwayne Mullin’s security detail. In announcing the pick, Trump said Schroyer had more than 29 years of law-enforcement experience in Oklahoma and had helped spearhead 287(g) law-enforcement partnerships with ICE. Trump presented that background as evidence of real operational experience and support for the agency’s personnel. He also said Schroyer had what it took to detain and deport illegal alien criminals, including murderers, rapists, and drug traffickers.
Senate Questions the Pick
Republican Senator Rand Paul stalled the nomination. Fox News reporter Bill Melugin added that ICE sources had been surprised by Schroyer’s initial selection because, according to those sources, he had no experience in immigration enforcement or leading a large law-enforcement agency. That criticism clashes with the White House’s presentation of Schroyer as an experienced operator. Trump urged the Senate to confirm him immediately and claimed his administration had the highest daily arrest rate by ICE and Customs and Border Protection of any president. The White House has now withdrawn the nomination, ending Schroyer’s path through the Senate.
