Tom Homan speaking about New York sanctuary policies

Tom Homan Destroys Hochul Over New York Sanctuary Policy

Homan renews his attack on sanctuary policy

Border czar Tom Homan used a Fox News appearance to argue that New York’s sanctuary policies are putting the public at risk. He said there is no good reason to let serious offenders remain on the streets when federal agents are trying to remove them. Homan said his team reviewed a list of the top 20 people arrested in New York and described charges that included homicide, rape, sexual assault, and kidnapping. His point was blunt, and not exactly subtle by government standards, which is saying something. He argued that state officials refused to honor ICE detainers, forcing agents to track suspects down in the community instead of picking them up in custody, where such things are usually easier and safer.

Hochul’s record keeps drawing federal fire

The criticism of Gov. Kathy Hochul did not start with this TV segment. The Department of Homeland Security previously accused her of helping a convicted criminal alien avoid deportation, a claim that has been part of a wider political fight over how far sanctuary policies should go. Supporters of those policies say they build trust with immigrant communities. Critics say they tie the hands of law enforcement and turn local governments into a kind of customer service desk for people with serious criminal records. That debate has become routine in blue-state politics, where officials often speak the language of public safety while defending rules that make public safety harder to deliver. Bureaucracy, as always, insists it is helping right up until the bill comes due.

Lawmakers say the victims tell the story

Homan’s comments came after a sharp House Oversight hearing in June 2025 where sanctuary state governors faced pressure from Republican lawmakers, including former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene cited several violent cases in New York and argued that sanctuary policies had real-world consequences, including the murder of nursing student Laken Riley, which she connected to a criminal illegal alien who had previously been arrested in New York and then released. Homan echoed that argument, saying state officials had refused to cooperate with federal detainers and had made the state less safe. He also said President Trump had done more to protect New Yorkers than Hochul had. That is quite the indictment for a governor who is supposed to be in charge of the place, not auditioning for an excuse memo.
