Police scene in New Orleans after a deadly attack

This Missouri man’s videos fueled a deadly attack

What prosecutors allege

Federal prosecutors say Jordan Derrick, a 40-year-old Missouri man, posted videos that showed how to make explosive materials and detonators. They allege the clips were not vague theory or harmless tinkering, but step-by-step instructions that could be used in the real world, which is usually where the trouble begins. According to investigators, Derrick is accused of manufacturing explosives without permission, keeping an unregistered destructive device, and sharing bomb-making material online.

How the New Orleans attack used that material

Authorities say Shamsud Din Jabbar, an ISIS-inspired attacker, downloaded Derrick’s tutorials before carrying out the New Year’s Day assault in New Orleans. Police say Jabbar drove a truck into crowds in the French Quarter, then exchanged gunfire with officers and was killed at the scene. Investigators also say he built improvised bombs using the same compounds shown in the videos, including RDX, and placed devices around Bourbon Street that did not detonate. That failure may have prevented even more deaths, a grim reminder that luck is not a security plan.

What the case says about online platforms

The case has renewed scrutiny of social platforms that brag about moderation while letting dangerous material spread until it is tied to bloodshed. Federal officials say this is an example of homegrown radicalization aided by digital content, and it raises an old question with fresh urgency: if a platform can find and flag the wrong opinion in seconds, why does it move with all the speed of a fax machine when actual bomb-making videos show up?
