Mullin, Schumer Trade Fire Over ICE

Schumer Takes Aim At Enforcement

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer used a Wednesday night floor speech to attack more funding for Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He argued that the country did not need to pour more money into agencies he said “nobody respects,” which is a brave line for a man speaking from the safest room in Washington. The remark landed as another round in the long fight over immigration, where Congress often talks like it is solving a problem it has helped keep alive for years.

Mullin Fires Back On Fox

When Fox News asked for a response, Mullin did not bother with polished Senate manners. He said Schumer was avoiding the real issue, which is whether Democrats want stronger enforcement or just another talking point for the next press release. Mullin said the criticism of ICE and Border Patrol was really a complaint about laws being enforced at all, and argued that Democrats had plenty of chances to change those policies during the Biden years. He also pointed out that Schumer has security protection while asking the public to shrug off the risks that come with weak borders and rising crime.

A Feud That Was Bound To Spill Online

Mullin and Schumer served together in the Senate for three years before Mullin took his current job last month, so this was not a mystery guest appearance. It was a familiar Washington script, with one side calling enforcement excessive and the other side calling that attitude reckless. Schumer also later described immigration enforcement as a “rogue police force,” which is the kind of phrase that sounds tough in a committee room and much less impressive when ordinary Americans are the ones left to deal with the consequences.
