Texas DPS trooper near a red pickup truck in a Del Rio hotel parking lot

Smuggler’s frantic escape ends in shocking discovery

Trooper Tip Leads to a Parking Lot Stop

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers say a tip led them to a red Chevy Colorado parked at a Del Rio hotel on May 10. A trooper approached the truck as part of a human smuggling investigation, and the driver took off on foot. He did not get far. Officers caught him nearby and identified him as Wilber Adonay Serrano Ruiz of Houston.

Four People Were Found in the Truck

Troopers say they found four people from Mexico hiding in the vehicle. Border Patrol took custody of them after the stop. Ruiz was charged with human smuggling. It is the kind of case that reminds everyone that smugglers do not exactly operate on the honor system. They rely on speed, confusion, and the hope that no one is looking too closely at a hotel parking lot.

Texas DPS Keeps Seeing the Same Pattern

Texas DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez posted video of the arrest and pointed to another stop earlier in the month in Maverick County, where passengers jumped from a Jeep during a traffic stop. The pattern is familiar enough: a tip, a stop, a dash for the door, and then a chase that police never asked for. Law enforcement may have more tools now, but smugglers still seem to think every shoulder, lot, and highway exit is part of the plan. The public, as usual, is supposed to admire the system while it cleans up the mess.
