Speaker Mike Johnson at the Capitol amid questions about a missing House vote

Missing GOP Vote Raises Fresh Questions

Kean Has Missed More Than 50 Votes

Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. of New Jersey has missed more than a month of House votes, with his last roll call on March 5. Speaker Mike Johnson said he spoke with Kean by phone and that the congressman is dealing with a personal health matter. Kean has not personally given his constituents a full explanation, which is unusual in a town where speeches are endless but clear answers are treated like rare antiques.

Johnson’s Majority Leaves No Slack

The timing is awkward for House Republicans. Johnson is trying to move Department of Homeland Security funding, a long-term FISA extension, and the farm bill through a very narrow majority. On party-line votes, he can barely lose any members at all. In other words, one absent lawmaker can matter a great deal, which is how fragile majorities become a full-time hobby for political reporters and a headache for everyone else.

Constituents Are Still Waiting

ABC News reported that Kean’s absence has raised concern because voters have not gotten a direct explanation from him. Johnson’s statement says Kean expects to be back to 100% soon and describes him as hard-working and dedicated. That may all be true, but the modern Washington habit is to replace details with warm language and hope nobody notices the gap. It is a bold strategy, if by bold one means predictable.

A Recent Reminder Of Secrecy

The situation also brings back a messy example from 2024, when Rep. Kay Granger of Texas was away from public view for months before a local reporter found she was living in a memory care facility. Granger later retired in January 2025. The episode showed how easily official silence can turn into a public-relations problem, especially when the people asking basic questions are treated like nuisances instead of taxpayers.
