Controversial Storming at ICE Detention Center: Denials and Hard Truths
A row broke out in New Jersey when Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) and other lawmakers stormed an ICE detention facility. The incident has everyone talking. New footage from bodycams shows a messy confrontation with federal agents.
McIver and her crew claimed they were on an oversight visit. But the bodycam seems to tell a different story. The footage clearly captures McIver elbowing and shoving an ICE agent.
The congresswoman insists she did nothing wrong. During her CNN “State of the Union” appearance, she said, “Absolutely no. I mean, I honestly do not know how to body slam anyone. There’s no video that supports me body slamming anyone,” she said. Her words clash with the hard evidence.
McIver, along with Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez, stormed the Delaney Hall Detention Center. Newark Mayor Ray Baraka also joined in the action. They claim their only goal was to “inspect” the facility. But the situation quickly turned hostile.
The fallout wasn’t just political chatter. Mayor Baraka was arrested on trespassing charges and held in ICE custody for five hours. And now, there’s talk of more criminal charges for McIver and her colleagues. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin warned, “If it was a typical U.S. citizen, and they tried to storm into a detention facility that’s housing dangerous criminals or any person at all, they would be arrested,” told Fox News.
McLaughlin didn’t pull any punches. “Just because you are a member of Congress or just because you’re a public official, does not mean you are above the law. If you assault a law enforcement officer, we will also make sure you answer to justice,” she added. These words speak loudly. They remind us that no one is untouchable.
Back on CNN, when pressed about the footage, McIver doubled down. “We, as Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman said we were simply there to do our job. There for an oversight visit. What you watch what you’re watching in the video, and we don’t have all of the body cam, and we hope that all of the body cam is released. It was a very tense situation. It unfortunately did not have to be like that.”
She even accused ICE of stirring the pot. “They created that chaos and then ultimately went to arrest the mayor of the largest city of New Jersey, who is my mayor and my constituent. And it was very difficult to watch that happen. But absolutely, I did not body slam anyone,” she said.
Rep. Watson Coleman went further by labeling the video as “manufactured.” She stated, “No, if there’s any such body—kind of footage, it is footage that is manufactured for this purpose. Because I said it before, and I’ll say it again, they are lying.”
The Department of Homeland Security is taking no chances. Their investigation is still on, and felony charges could be coming for those involved. No matter who you are—lawmaker or citizen—you are not above the law. This incident serves as a stark reminder that actions have consequences, and anyone who breaks the rules will face justice.
