Deadly Crash Suspect, Released by Biden, Now Held by ICE

ICE takes custody after a deadly crash

Federal immigration agents have arrested Georgii Gabiev, a Russian national linked to a fatal 2024 crash in rural Minnesota. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Gabiev entered the United States in 2022 and was later released into the country. ICE arrested him in Brooklyn on June 9 and is holding him pending removal. Tim Tarnowski, a truck driver, died after the crash. It is a grim case, and it has also raised the usual question about a system that can track a man after the fact, but somehow struggles before tragedy happens.

Investigators say he blew a stop sign

Authorities say Gabiev was driving in Chippewa County on March 5, 2024, when he went through a stop sign and struck Tarnowski. Reports say Gabiev told law enforcement he was watching a YouTube video on an iPad while trying to learn English. That detail is hard to read without thinking about how many layers of bad judgment can fit into one rural intersection. Gabiev later pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular manslaughter and served 120 days in jail. Meanwhile, Tarnowski’s family was left to deal with the loss, which is the part no press release can tidy up.

DHS blames border policy, as expected

The Department of Homeland Security used the case to attack Biden-era border policy, saying the crash would not have happened if the administration had not allowed large numbers of illegal crossings. That is a political argument, but the facts still matter on their own. A man entered illegally, was released, caused a fatal crash, served a short sentence, and was finally picked up by ICE more than a year later. Bureaucracy has a remarkable gift for showing up after the paperwork is overdue and the damage is permanent. Tarnowski’s wife, Tammy, and the rest of the family are now the ones left to carry the bill.
