Convention Spotlight Shines on Canine Star

Babydog: The Unexpected Star of the Republican National Convention

Stepping away from the standard political discourse, let’s shine a spotlight on an unexpected sensation at this year’s Republican National Convention (RNC) held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Amidst speeches delivered by Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and other conservative luminaries, the real star of the show is none other than a lovable bulldog named Babydog.

Babydog, who is the cherished pet of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, has become an internet sensation with her laid-back and endearing demeanor.

As Governor Justice addressed the crowd during his speech, Babydog could be seen comfortably lounging on a black leather armchair. Seemingly unfazed by the throng of politicians and attendees surrounding her, this adorable moment quickly went viral and captured hearts far beyond the confines of the convention hall.

Governor Justice made sure to mention his four-legged friend in his remarks, bringing a touch of humor and warmth to the event. He said, “Babydog has got a prediction for everybody here. Babydog says that we will retain the House, the majority in the House, we are going to flip the United States Senate and overwhelmingly we are going to elect Donald J. Trump and J.D. Vance in November.” With a confident flair, he added that Babydog is sure of her predictions because “we’re worth it.”

Indiana Congressman Jim Banks also acknowledged Babydog during his speech saying,“I don’t know about you, but thank God Babydog is a Republican.” This light-hearted remark further cemented Babydog’s status as a convention favorite.

Born in 2019, Babydog has rapidly gained popularity not just in West Virginia, but also on the national stage. She first came into prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic when Governor Justice coined the slogan “Do It for Babydog” to motivate West Virginians to participate in a vaccination lottery. Her charming presence has been commemorated with a mural at the state capitol.

According to The New York Times, Babydog’s appearance at the RNC sparked an enthusiasm typically reserved for high-profile figures like former President Donald Trump. As she was brought onstage, attendees erupted into chants of “Babydog! Babydog!”, demonstrating her undeniable appeal among both attendees and viewers.

Alongside his two Boston Terriers named Lucy and Ellie, Governor Justice often includes Babydog in his public appearances.

According to the West Virginia Governor’s website, “Whether it be special appearances on the biggest of stages, like the Governor’s State of the State address, or simply meeting people and shaking paws in her travels, Babydog always makes everyone smile everywhere that she and the Governor go.”
