James Comey speaking after a federal indictment announcement

Comey Hit Again, This Time With an Indictment

The new charges

James Comey has been indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina on two felony counts tied to a social media post that prosecutors say crossed the line from bad taste into a threat against President Trump. The government says the post, which showed seashells on a beach and included the caption “Cool shell formation on my beach walk,” was not just an odd little travel note from a former FBI director with too much faith in his own framing. It is now part of a criminal case that could bring up to 20 years in prison if the charges stick. The US Marshals were asked to deliver the indictment, and an arrest warrant was issued.

What the government says

According to the indictment, Comey is accused of knowingly and willfully making a threat to take the life of, or inflict bodily harm on, the President of the United States, and of transmitting a threat in interstate and foreign commerce. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, FBI Director Kash Patel, and US Attorney Ellis Boyle all spoke after the grand jury acted, and Blanche said the point was simple: people are not allowed to threaten the President. That is not exactly a shocking rule. It is more like the floor of public order, the kind of thing that should not need a stage, lighting, and a government-produced reminder. Yet politics keeps turning basic standards into a full production.

Comey pushes back

Comey answered in a video message posted to his Substack, where he insisted he is innocent and said the case is about a picture of seashells on a North Carolina beach from a year ago. He said, “This won’t be the end of it,” which sounds less like a legal defense and more like the opening line of a long feud between a man and the same federal machine he once helped steer. His case is now being sold as either law enforcement or political revenge, depending on which cable panel or press release you trust, and those are not always reliable guides. The Trump team says the law applies to everyone. Comey says the charges are nonsense. The grand jury, as usual, has opted out of the debate and handed the fight to the courts.
