A Bus Ride Turns Into a Standoff
A Monday school bus ride in Calaveras County, California, turned into a tense scene after a Calaveras Unified bus stopped along Highway 49 near Russell Road and students were reportedly kept on board for about an hour. According to KCRA 3, the trouble began when a student allegedly tried to climb out a window before the bus had fully stopped. The driver then pulled over, contacted law enforcement, and told students to stay seated and roll up the windows. That may have sounded orderly on paper, where all fine bureaucratic theories live rent-free. On the roadside, parents gathered, students shouted, and children began squeezing out of open windows while at least one adult climbed into the bus.
Parents Split Over What Should Have Happened
One 12-year-old student told KCRA the children had been loud and excited to get off the bus before the situation escalated. Parent Nichole Wellington said her frightened son called her from inside the bus, prompting her to rush to the scene and ask the driver to release him. “Dude, open the door. Let me have my kid,” Wellington recalled saying. She said the driver refused, so she told her son to climb out through a window. Wellington argued the chaos could have been avoided if the driver had released children to parents who were already there to collect them. Another parent, Rebecca Glover, disagreed and told her two children to remain seated, saying the driver had to consider the safety of every student, not only those whose parents had arrived.
Glass Breaks, Then an Arrest
The confrontation escalated when a parent struck the bus door and shattered the glass. Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jason Waite said deputies responded to a disturbance involving a parent and the driver. “The parent struck the bus door, breaking the glass,” Waite said. The adult was taken into custody at the school district’s request for alleged vandalism. Sheriff’s arrest logs cited by MyMotherLode identified the arrested parent as Kathleen Kraker, 35, of Sheep Ranch, who was arrested on a felony charge involving defacing property. Waite also warned that students should not use a school bus window as an exit unless there is a real emergency, which is sensible advice, though it arrives after a whole busload of children apparently decided the window plan had become the least ridiculous option available.

Calaveras Unified Superintendent Kassie Meeks said concerns about student behavior had escalated until law enforcement was needed. She also said the incident disrupted one bus route the next day, but declined to provide more details because students and law enforcement were involved.
