The New York Post reported that the disaster is believed to have started when a wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river along the Himalayan border between Nepal and China-controlled Tibet, causing catastrophic flooding on the Nepali side. Nepal’s foreign minister, Shisir Khanal, told parliament that initial reports suggested the floods could have followed an avalanche triggered by an earthquake. Sky News also cited early findings suggesting a glacier landslide may have been the main cause. The German Research Centre for Geosciences said a 4.4 magnitude quake occurred about seven minutes before CCTV footage showed mud and water destroying buildings in Gyirong. Qianggong Zhang of the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development suggested an ice-rock avalanche in the Lhende Khola river on the Nepali side may have been the trigger.
Videos Show Buildings, Homes, and a Bridge Swept Away
Additional footage from the region showed floodwater rushing through the valley near Trishuli Bazar, sweeping away houses and a bridge within seconds. Another video was identified as showing the Timure flash flood in Rasuwa. The force of the water in these clips shows why rescue and recovery work can become so difficult in steep mountain terrain, where rivers can turn violent with little warning. Sky News reported that experts also warned about the risk of a second flood because a blockage was still lodged upstream along the Nepal-China border river. That warning leaves authorities with the grim task of responding to the disaster already in motion while watching for another surge.
