WATCH: “It’s Not Political, It’s Just Science”: Company Killing Algae in Reflecting Pool Fires Back [VIDEO]

A cleanup contract turned into another Beltway food fight

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was supposed to be a simple maintenance story. Instead, it became the sort of Washington drama where everyone pretends to care about water chemistry until politics starts throwing chairs. Greenwater Services was hired in April by the Department of the Interior to install a fully integrated Nano Bubble Filtration System meant to replace the pool’s failing filtration setup. The company says the algae has now been almost completely removed, and photos from Wednesday showed clear water in most of the pool. That did not stop the usual chorus from circling the wagons and yelling about donors, expertise, and motive, because apparently a working cleanup is never allowed to be merely a working cleanup. In the modern media economy, every wrench becomes a scandal if enough people squint hard enough.

Greenwater says ozone nano bubbles are doing the heavy lifting

Erin Kramer, a spokeswoman for Greenwater Services, said the company is using ozone treatment technology backed by research from Ohio State University and environmental journals. The system pumps ozone, or O3, in nano bubbles through the water column. As those bubbles burst, she said, they kill the algae and leave behind what she described as crystal clear water with oxygen as the byproduct. She also said the sediment drops to the bottom, where it can be vacuumed up. In other words, the pool is doing what pools are supposed to do, which is a remarkable upgrade for a city that can turn a clogged drain into a think piece. Kramer compared the setup to a fish bubbler on steroids, and said the method is already used in rivers, lakes, and ponds across the country. She called it cutting edge environmental technology and said the point was not politics but science, which is usually what people say right before politics starts demanding a podium.

The duck panic met a very ordinary duck family

Part of the online uproar came from a viral image of a dead duckling in the Reflecting Pool, along with claims that workers were harming wildlife while clearing the algae. TMZ reported that a dead duck had been found floating in the pool days after workers were seen dumping hydrogen peroxide into the water. Kramer pushed back on the idea that the cleanup was dangerous, saying the process is completely chemical-free in the sense that it does not create an environment that would hurt wildlife. She also noted that most of the work happens in nature, where the system is designed for ponds, rivers, and lakes. Then, just to complicate the script, Conradson reported seeing a mother duck and her brood healthy in the water moments later. So the internet got its tragedy, then got its correction, which is how these stories usually go when people rush to moral certainty before checking whether the ducks are still fine.

CNN got the usual round of blame, and Trump got the bill

The political show was never far behind the water work. On CNN, Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross clashed with contributor Scott Jennings over the project and blamed Trump for the algae in the stagnant Reflecting Pool and for the contractor choice. She said he had flushed money down the drain and suggested the company was picked because of Mar-a-Lago connections. Greenwater’s critics in the press have also raised concerns about a possible conflict of interest because a part owner is a GOP donor, and some have questioned the company’s filtration background. Kramer, meanwhile, kept her focus on the actual job and the actual water, which is a rare and unfashionable habit in a town that prefers narrative over maintenance. The broader scene says a lot about modern public debate: if a government project works, activists hunt for a scandal, media outlets hunt for a motive, and everyone else is left looking at a clearer pool wondering why common sense had to file for a press pass.
