Ana Navarro speaking during a televised CNN panel discussion

WATCH: Ana Navarro Loses It When Asked to Name Americans Killed by Illegals

A CNN Debate Turns to Names

A CNN panel discussion grew tense after commentator and The View co-host Ana Navarro criticized ICE and Border Patrol over several fatal law enforcement encounters. Navarro listed people she said had been killed by federal immigration authorities, including Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, whose recent death was at the center of the segment. Former Trump White House staffer Caroline Sunshine then asked Navarro whether she also knew the names of Americans killed by illegal immigrants. Navarro said she knew some of the names but did not have a list. When Sunshine pressed her to name them, Navarro said the exchange was not a contest over who knew which names.

The Shooting That Framed the Segment

The discussion focused in part on the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, identified in the source report as an illegal immigrant from Mexico. According to that account, the shooting happened during a traffic stop after Salgado Araujo rammed an ICE vehicle, ignored multiple verbal commands, and attempted to run over an ICE agent. Federal immigration enforcement cases often become national political fights before the public sees every fact, and this one followed that pattern quickly. Supporters of ICE pointed to officer safety and self-defense. Critics, including Navarro, focused on deaths tied to federal immigration enforcement and called for accountability.

Navarro Lists ICE Cases, Sunshine Asks for Another List

Navarro said there had been “at least five people killed by ICE in the streets of America” and named several cases during the CNN discussion. She referred to Ruben Rey Martinez, Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, Keith Porter, Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Sunshine interrupted the line of argument by asking, “Do you know the names as well of Americans who have been killed by illegal immigrants? Do you have that list?” Navarro replied, “I know some of the names. I don’t have the list, but I do know some of the names.” Sunshine followed up by asking for some of those names, and the exchange moved from policy into the painful question of whose deaths receive attention on national television.

Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray, and Kate Steinle Enter the Exchange

When Navarro said she wanted to “put names and faces and stories” to the people she was discussing, Sunshine said she agreed and added that the same should apply to Americans killed by illegal immigrants. Sunshine then named Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray, and Kate Steinle. Those names carry deep grief for many families and communities, and they are often cited by conservatives who argue that border policy has real public-safety costs. Navarro responded by saying, “Okay, but the people they killed don’t have criminal records,” then shifted to ask about people killed by U.S. citizens. Sunshine questioned the relevance of that comparison, since the immediate topic was immigration enforcement and crimes tied to illegal immigration.

The Argument Behind the Argument

Navarro argued that more people in the United States are killed by U.S. citizens than by illegal immigrants, and she said the panel was discussing what she described as a government agency “out of control.” She also accused immigration authorities of killing American citizens and immigrants without criminal records who were not targets of investigations, then said there had not been enough investigation or accountability. Sunshine’s point was different: if public debate is going to center victims’ names, then victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants should not be treated as an inconvenient footnote. That tension is the larger fight. One side frames the issue as abusive enforcement. The other frames it as a border and public-safety failure. The families behind all of these names are left carrying losses that no cable segment can repair.
