Hanson Sees Trouble for the Left
Conservative scholar and historian Victor Davis Hanson offered a pointed forecast for the 2026 midterms during a recent podcast, and it was not the tidy “Democrats have this wrapped up” story often favored by the political press. Hanson said he is “very confident about the Senate” and named several races where he expects Republican-friendly outcomes. He predicted Al-Sayed will lose, Talarico will lose, Susan Collins will win, Jackson will lose, and Republicans will keep Lindsey Graham’s seat. That is a specific list, not the usual consultant fog machine that says everything is “fluid” until the invoice clears.
The House Is Still in Play
Hanson also said Republicans may have a shot at keeping the House, even though history often works against the president’s party in midterm years. His estimate was measured but clear: “I’m cautiously optimistic they’ll hold the Senate and they have a 40 to 50% chance of holding the House.” That is not a victory lap. It is a warning that the race may not fit the preferred media template. The old assumption was that Democrats could ride anti-Trump anger straight into power. Hanson’s view is that the political map may be more complicated than that, which is always annoying when a narrative has already been laminated.
The DSA Problem
The sharpest part of Hanson’s argument focused on socialist candidates and the Democratic Socialists of America lane of the party. According to the transcript shared by Overton News, Hanson said, “These socialist candidates are stupid.” His larger point was that Democrats face a trap. If party leaders attack those candidates, some of their base may stay home in the general election. If Democrats embrace them, Republicans can tie the party to what Hanson called “crazy positions.” In other words, the party’s activist wing is not just making noise. It may be writing campaign ads for the other side, free of charge, which is generous in a very Washington sort of way.
