President Trump spoke to reporters Wednesday while surveying the new White House Ballroom, just after a painful night for Republicans in the midterm elections. The political blame game moved quickly, and Vance offered a remarkably direct explanation for the losses: the Iran war.
The Democrats flipped the House on Tuesday evening and held 228 House seats by Wednesday morning. Democrats also flipped seven United States Senate seats, while the Alaska and Mississippi contests remained too close to call. Five governorships changed hands as well, in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas.
Vance argued that turnout was not the central problem. In a social media post, he wrote, “Our voters did show up.” He pointed to Florida, where the electorate was nine points more Republican than Democrat, describing that result as only a couple of points worse than 2024.
Vance then made the part that was certain to dominate the political conversation. “Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he wrote.
He also acknowledged that Republicans could have sharpened their economic message. “One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true,” Vance said. That is a more candid assessment than the standard political fog about reviewing results and moving forward, though the post did not stop there.
“But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone….” Vance added. “The reason we lost is the war.”
A reporter asked President Trump whether he agreed with Vance’s assertion that the Iran war caused Republicans to suffer such heavy losses. President Trump did not distance himself from the statement. “I knew… I know how he feels about it. I think it was fine. I thought it was good,” he said of Vance’s comments.
President Trump also defended the outcome of the Iran policy itself. “We knew that. I knew that when I went in. And we stopped [Iran] from having a nuclear weapon and they will never have a nuclear weapon,” he said.
So while Republicans sort through the House, Senate, and gubernatorial losses, the argument from Vance is already on the table. He says voters did turn out, but some 2024 Trump/Vance voters supported Democrats in 2026. President Trump, rather than rejecting that explanation, stood by the decision that Vance identified as the central cause.
