Viewer discretion is advised: The videos accompanying this report contain footage of a fatal shooting.
A woman was killed at a Citibank campus in Tampa, Florida, before an armed security guard stopped the gunman. Newly released surveillance footage shows the confrontation, and Sheriff Chad Chronister is crediting guard John Fraley with preventing an already terrible attack from becoming even worse.
The suspect, identified as Jacob Pearson, drove a vehicle through a gate and entered a building carrying a rifle. The shooting occurred Wednesday, with emergency dispatchers receiving calls at 12:11 p.m.
According to the report, Pearson fatally shot the woman over a delinquent $2,500 credit card debt. Hours earlier, he had threatened to shoot up the building over a court summons related to the debt. A debt dispute became a deadly attack on people at their workplace.
Fraley, identified in the accompanying coverage as a Marine veteran, confronted Pearson inside the cafeteria. The armed guard shot the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at TGH. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chronister praised Fraley’s decision to confront the attacker rather than escape. That distinction matters. Training and preparedness are not decorative items on a corporate checklist; in this case, the sheriff credited them with saving lives.
“John Fraley confronted this suspect and is a hero, plain and simple. In a moment when most people would run away from danger, this guard ran toward it and stopped the threat within minutes of the first shots being fired,” Chronister said.
“With more than 3,200 people on that campus, there is no doubt that these quick and courageous actions saved lives. We are deeply grateful to the entire Citibank security team for their training, their preparedness, and their bravery under unimaginable pressure.”
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrived within one minute and entered the building. More than 400 law enforcement personnel responded, including 367 sheriff’s deputies. Authorities described the case as a homicide investigation and asked anyone with video of the incident to submit it.
Another video shared by Adam Francisco was described as footage supplied by an anonymous Citibank employee. It showed a man holding a rifle while people ran. Authorities confirmed that both the suspect and one victim had died.
Fraley deserves the recognition, but the woman killed in this attack must not become a footnote to the security response. A family lost someone. The sheriff’s praise reflects what happened next: an armed, prepared guard confronted the killer while thousands of other people were on campus.
