Russell Brand faces a lengthy prison sentence after a London jury convicted him of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, according to The Gateway Pundit. The verdict followed a nearly four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court. Celebrity status is not a substitute for accountability, however impressive the résumé.

The report says the 51-year-old comedian, actor and podcaster was convicted of raping a 21-year-old fan he met at a 2009 stand-up show at the Hammersmith Apollo. The three sexual assault convictions involved other women and incidents between 2004 and 2009.

The jury also acquitted Brand of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. Those acquittals belong in the story, too. Reporting a criminal verdict means reporting what the jury rejected as well as what it accepted.

Judge Joel Bennathan warned that a sentence of “significant length” would follow and ordered Brand remanded into custody pending sentencing on Monday, November 9, the outlet reported. That is a warning about the punishment ahead, not an announced prison term.

Brand denied every charge. He maintained that the encounters were consensual or that the accounts had been reinvented or reimagined. During the trial, he also claimed he was the target of a media conspiracy. Prosecutors, meanwhile, described him as a “ruthless sexual predator.”

According to the report, jurors deliberated for roughly eight and a half hours. Brand closed his eyes when the rape conviction was announced. His wife, Laura Gallacher, was present in court.

The Metropolitan Police said their investigation began after Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Times published allegations in September 2023. Detectives gathered evidence from more than 100 witnesses, took more than 400 statements and reviewed thousands of documents, including Brand’s own books.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy praised the women who reported their experiences: “Today’s verdict is first and foremost a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them. Despite intense media and public scrutiny, they relived deeply personal and traumatic experiences and placed their trust in us. Without their bravery, this outcome would not have been possible.”

Furphy also said: “Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women. As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be.”

Police are still investigating additional rape allegations involving two other women, including one who alleges she was 16 at the time. Those remain allegations under investigation, separate from the convictions returned by this jury. Fame should buy neither immunity nor a shortcut around due process.
