Rudy Giuliani Tells Lara Logan He Knew January 6 Was a “Fixed Operation”

Former New York City Mayor and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani told moderator Lara Logan that he believed he understood what had happened by the time he went to bed on January 6, 2021. “It was a very unusual experience for me because, let me begin by telling you, by the time I went to sleep on the evening of January 6th, I knew exactly what was going on,” Giuliani said. “I knew exactly that it was a fixed operation.” He said he did not need the House committee led by Liz Cheney, an Obama-era prosecutor, or years of television commentary to reach that conclusion.

Questions About Capitol Security

Logan pressed Giuliani about the security failures that left the Capitol vulnerable. She said she had asked Bernard Kerik, the former NYPD commissioner, what he would have done to protect the building. Kerik’s answer was to place mounted officers around the Capitol, adding that one mounted officer was worth about three officers on the ground. The account also cites leaked footage in which then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, “I take responsibility,” after security collapsed. It says later White House documentation recorded Pelosi’s refusal of an offer of 10,000 National Guard troops and notes that former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund has said he made 11 urgent calls for the Guard beginning at 12:58 p.m. and waited 71 minutes for approval. Giuliani and Logan presented those details as evidence that the security breakdown was not simply spontaneous.

Giuliani’s Claims About Obama

Asked what indicators led him to view January 6 as an operation, Giuliani said he agreed completely with General Michael Flynn that Barack Obama was responsible for “the darkest hours in American history.” Giuliani called Obama an “anti-president” and said claims he once considered exaggerated now appeared flagrant to him. He also described the events as part of what he called a communist plan to overthrow the United States. Those are Giuliani’s allegations and political conclusions, offered during the discussion with Logan.

The Election Disputes Giuliani Raised

Giuliani said he was still serving as Trump’s impeachment lawyer that week and was trying to persuade Vice President Mike Pence to pause the electoral count. He said four state legislatures had written Pence asking him to wait. Giuliani described the Georgia and Pennsylvania submissions as “ironclad,” called Arizona “very, very cozy,” and labeled Wisconsin’s election “completely illegal.” He argued that Wisconsin law required an absentee affidavit and that ballots without one should have been canceled. In his view, canceling those ballots would have produced a Trump victory. The Wisconsin Supreme Court called that penalty “too harsh,” a ruling Giuliani called “absurd.” He also discussed roughly 900,000 Pennsylvania ballots that he said were counted without a Republican inspector able to observe the count directly. Giuliani said one Republican in a room the size of a basketball arena was treated as if he could see the entire process and quoted a judge describing that role as reducing the inspector to “a potted plant.”
