Rubio Presses Venezuela to Honor Deportation Flights or Brace for Escalating Sanctions

Venezuela Faces a Hard Choice

The message is clear and uncompromising. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned: “Venezuela will face “severe, and escalating sanctions” if it refuses to accept its citizens who have been deported from the United States.”

This isn’t just talk. The Trump administration is ramping up deportations of Venezuelans living illegally in the U.S. There’s also talk of a temporary residency program for hundreds of thousands. But the proposal might strip many of their legal status.

Many of these folks came over during Venezuela’s deep economic collapse. They were escaping the chaos under President Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian rule.

Rubio’s message left no wiggle room. He wrote on X: “Venezuela is obligated to accept its repatriated citizens from the U.S. This is not an issue for debate or negotiation. Nor does it merit any reward. Unless the Maduro regime accepts a consistent flow of deportation flights, without further excuses or delays, the U.S. will impose new, severe, and escalating sanctions.”

The pressure is on. The strong, no-nonsense language echoes the Republican view: America’s rules stand firm. And if Venezuela doesn’t play ball, they’ll pay the price.

This warning came right after Richard Grenell, President Donald Trump’s special envoy, announced that the Maduro government had finally agreed to accept repatriation flights. Maduro had been dragging his feet, initially flat-out refusing to take back his citizens.

The message for Maduro is unmistakable: Stand aside and follow the rules, or face serious consequences from the U.S. administration.
