Rep. Brandon Gill’s Columbus Day message praising Christopher Columbus triggered a wave of angry responses from left-wing users. A post celebrating a historical figure quickly became another online culture-war brawl, complete with accusations, profanity, and demands that Americans apologize for their history.

Gill wrote, “Christopher Columbus is one of the great men of world history. Guided by faith in Christ, our European ancestors came to the New World, settled wild lands, and built western civilization. Our history and our culture are exceptional– and we’re no longer apologizing for it.”

That was enough to set off a string of furious replies. One user, BRAIN, responded, “U stole the land, kill many people. U people are savages, the real devil of the world.” It is difficult to imagine a more productive response to a historical discussion, unless the goal was simply to throw insults at the screen and call it analysis.

Billie Nelson offered a longer attack, writing, “Um, no! He kidnapped Indigenous people and discussed conquering them. He forced Taíno people to work for Spanish colonists. He imposed coercive gold tributes. He sent people to Spain to be sold as slaves. He, in fact, was fucking trash!”

Another response from Chief Marvel was even more severe: “Of course you worship a man who committed genocide, enslaved people, and trafficked humans for profit, including taking young girls as sex slaves…oh & treated sexual violence as a reward for his soldiers…that totally tracks 👍👍”

Other users also skipped any attempt at a measured conversation. Tommie Jayne wrote, “Sure. Just make shit up as you go along instead of admitting the man was a brutal despot who died in disgrace.” Akevv Flurry accused Gill’s supporters of racism, writing, “I was wondering when the racists would show up praising Columbus. You didn’t disappoint.”

Robert Young Pelton delivered perhaps the strangest response of the bunch: “What is the point of dim Christo fascists knob slobbering a loser? It didn’t work out. Move on.” Apparently, even a holiday tweet now requires a full ideological exorcism.

The argument presented in the article is that the controversy has moved beyond a discussion of Christopher Columbus. Columbus has become a symbol in a larger fight over Christianity, European ancestry, American history, and Western civilization. Gill’s message was unapologetic about those subjects, and that unapologetic tone appears to be what made the post so inflammatory to his critics.

People can debate Columbus and the history surrounding him. That debate does not require pretending that every expression of pride in Western civilization is sinister, racist, or fascist. In this case, a short Columbus Day message became another round in the culture war, while the furious reactions did more to advertise the conflict than to answer Gill’s defense of American history and culture.
