A giant wooden crucifix dislodged from a church wall during a Saturday Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador, falling on Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari as he celebrated the service. The Mass was being livestreamed, and the video has been marked as containing distressing content.

The priest had just delivered a sermon about using time wisely, warning parishioners not to waste their lives on trivial matters. His words were direct, familiar, and deeply religious, but the horrifying event that followed gave them an unbearable weight.

“Dear brothers and sisters, one day we will all die, and the time we spent on trivial things will prove far less meaningful than the time we invested in God,” said Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari.

“The quality time we gave to Him, to our brothers and sisters, to our spouses, to our children, and to our families,” he continued. “That is time well spent, dear brothers and sisters.”

Moments later, parishioners watched in horror as the enormous crucifix fell on top of the priest and crushed him. Worshippers rushed forward to help while a woman shouted, “Father! Father!” as she called for an ambulance.

The Archdiocese confirmed that Father Sánchez Molinari died from his injuries. It identified him as the parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate and issued a statement mourning his death.

“We announce that our beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR, who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory,” the Archdiocese said.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen,” the statement continued.

The timing is especially sobering. Father Sánchez Molinari had been urging people to focus on God, faith, family, and the people closest to them. There was no tidy sermon illustration here, only a tragic accident that turned a warning about mortality into the final moments of a priest’s life.

His message about time now stands as the most haunting part of the service. Life is often filled with distractions, arguments, and pointless distractions that seem urgent until something terrible reminds people how quickly circumstances can change. That reminder arrived in the worst possible way for this congregation.

The video below carries a warning for distressing content.
