An ordinary morning at a Des Moines post office turned into a frantic escape Thursday after a postal worker allegedly opened fire on two colleagues. The most disturbing allegation: Police say she stood over one wounded woman and fired again.
Jennifer Christine Pledger, 39, faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of willful injury causing serious injury and one count of intimidation. Those are allegations, not convictions. Accountability matters, and so does letting the courts do their job.
The two women who were shot, ages 45 and 53, were reported in stable condition. A 55-year-old male employee injured in a fall while escaping was also stable. None of their injuries were believed to be life-threatening, a welcome piece of news in an otherwise grim account.
According to the Associated Press, officers began receiving 911 calls around 9:10 a.m. Witnesses described roughly 10 to 12 shots on the second floor of the main post office, in an employee area closed to the public.
Police allege Pledger shot the women, fired again while standing over one of them and continued shooting as she fled. Investigators have not announced a motive. That leaves a serious unanswered question, not an invitation to invent an explanation.
The first officers arrived in about three minutes, according to Des Moines police. Pledger was detained without resistance at 9:21 a.m. on a nearby bike path, less than half a mile away. Investigators said they recovered a 9mm handgun where she was taken into custody.
That puts roughly 11 minutes between the first emergency calls and the detention. For employees trying to get out of a building where shots were being fired, those minutes were hardly an abstract response-time statistic.
KCCI identified the location as the USPS processing and distribution plant at 1165 Second Avenue. The two wounded women took themselves to nearby MercyOne Medical Center. A Des Moines officer transported the man injured during the escape.
Multiple local agencies assisted, along with the Iowa State Patrol, FBI, ATF and U.S. Postal Inspectors. Nearby Carver Elementary School and two district facilities were temporarily placed in secure status until authorities confirmed the suspect was in custody.
Gov. Kim Reynolds said, “The suspected shooter is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.” She also said she was in contact with the Department of Public Safety and thanked law enforcement for its immediate response.
Government agencies are not always celebrated for moving quickly. Here, the reported timeline gives police credit where it is due. Three employees were hurt, their coworkers faced gunfire, and investigators now have to establish what happened and why. The criminal case deserves careful work, not shortcuts or a ready-made political explanation.
