This article was originally published by The Gateway Pundit on September 25, 2019. It revisits a report alleging that newly uncovered photographs, social media posts, and family records provided additional evidence that Rep. Ilhan Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi as part of an immigration scheme. The claims are presented as allegations in the original report, not as an independent finding.
The report focused on a resurfaced tweet in which Omar linked to a now-deleted Instagram post referring to her father as Nur Said. It also noted that Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009. Based on the naming convention described in the article, the report argued that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was the son of Nur Said, making him Omar’s brother. After Gateway Pundit and other outlets reported on the matter, Omar deleted the tweet, according to the article.
Additional resurfaced posts became part of the controversy. In a series of January tweets, Omar’s sister Sahra Noor discussed her lawmaker relative and referred to her “other sister” with a winking emoji. Four days earlier, Noor had shared a photograph from a family reunion that included several men and Leila Nur Said Elmi. In December 2016, a man named Suleiman Axoow wrote on Facebook, “On Wednesday night I had an opportunity to have dinner with State Representative-Elect Ilhan Omar & her lovely sis Leila Elmi.”
Noor is described in the report as the only sibling Omar had publicly acknowledged. Journalist David Steinberg obtained a copy of Leila Elmi’s marriage certificate, which listed Nur Said as her father. The article also revisited Omar’s 2017 divorce proceedings, saying she swore under penalty of perjury that she had not seen Ahmed N. Elmi since 2011, did not know anyone who could help contact him, and did not know any of his relatives. That is a remarkably narrow circle of knowledge for a marriage involving a family member, if the report’s allegations are accurate.
A July report by Steinberg presented a broader account of Omar’s family history and asylum application. It stated, “That is not her family. The Omar family is a second, unrelated family which was being granted asylum by the United States . The Omars allowed Ilhan, her genetic sister Sahra, and her genetic father Nur Said to use false names to apply for asylum as members of the Omar family,”
Steinberg reported that Ilhan Abdullahi Omar’s name before applying for asylum was Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. The report identified her father as Nur Said Elmi Mohamed and her sister Sahra Noor as Sahra Nur Said Elmi. It also listed Leila Nur Said Elmi, Mohamed Nur Said Elmi, and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi as three siblings who received asylum in the United Kingdom using their real names, according to the account.
The article further repeated a claim that Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, also known as Nur Said Elmi Mohamed, was connected to former Somali dictator Said Barre. It said Nur and other former Barre accomplices were living illegally in the United States. The Daily Caller was also cited as reporting, “In 2017, she filed for divorce from Elmi and said she hadn’t seen him since 2012. She swore under oath that she did not know the name of a single member of his family and did not know anyone who knew him. But another Power Line screenshot of a deleted post from Omar’s Instagram account shows her with Elmi in London during this period.”
The report’s case rests on a mix of photographs, deleted posts, family names, a marriage certificate, and differing accounts about when Omar last saw Elmi. That is precisely why the allegations continued to attract attention, because political controversies rarely disappear when the paper trail keeps resurfacing. The original report remains a flashback to the claims and evidence presented in 2019.
