MLB Warns Giants Pitchers After Bible Verses on Pride Caps

Giants pitchers wore Bible verses on Pride caps

Three San Francisco Giants pitchers drew MLB attention Friday after they wrote Bible references on special Pride Night caps during the game at Wrigley Field. Landen Roupp wore “Gen 9:12-16,” JT Brubaker wrote “Genesis 9:13-15,” and Ryan Walker added a similar verse on his cap. Sam Hentges did not wear the Pride hat at all. The whole episode was a reminder that modern pro sports can turn a uniform into a seminar, which is a lot to ask from headwear.

MLB says the writing broke uniform rules

MLB said Monday that the cap markings violated its uniform policy and that the players had been warned about future violations. The league also said the warning was not disciplinary and had “absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message,” because bureaucracies love one sentence that tries to do the work of two. MLB said writing of any kind is barred under its regulations, which means the dispute now lives in the usual place: the gap between a rule on paper and the reaction it creates in public.

Roupp says he meant to share his faith

After the game, Roupp said he wore the verse to share “God’s covenant” and “the promise that He makes to us,” along with God’s faithfulness and mercy. He added that he stands firm in what he believes and that Americans still have freedom of belief. Giants manager Tony Vitello backed the players’ right to act as they thought best, according to The Athletic. In other words, the team appeared more relaxed than the league office, which is not a sentence that surprises anyone who has met a league office.

Vance posts a sharp response

Vice President JD Vance weighed in on X, writing, “Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore.” The post pushed the story beyond a baseball uniform dispute and into the larger fight over how far sports leagues will go to police personal expression while dressing it up as neutral policy. That is the kind of spin only a corporate statement can deliver with a straight face.
