Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office released a new photo Monday showing the Kentucky Republican smiling in a rehab bed beside his wife, Elaine Chao, during what has now been a 44-day absence from the Senate. Earlier this month, McConnell released another photo and statement after rumors about his health spread online, including claims that he was brain dead or being kept alive by machines. According to the medical statement cited by his office, McConnell did not suffer a heart attack or stroke. McConnell said doctors confirmed he had no broken bones, no concussion, no tumors, and no hemorrhages, though he was briefly unconscious after the fall and was taken to the hospital. He also said he dealt with a mild case of pneumonia while receiving care. The Office of Attending Physician said he has had several falls this year tied to his post-polio condition and was admitted to the hospital four weeks earlier after falling at home and sustaining minor injuries.

McConnell’s absence has drawn more scrutiny because of his age, his leadership history, and the narrow margins that often shape Senate business. He told Kentuckians in an earlier statement that when they elected him to a seventh term, they trusted him to keep showing up to fight for them.
