Family Shares Grim Update
Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old Arizona State University hockey player and St. Louis Blues prospect, remains hospitalized in a coma after collapsing during an outdoor team workout on Aug. 20. According to media reports citing the family’s lawyer, Robert Carey, Mayich now has “zero chance of recovery.” His family has asked for continued prayers as they face a devastating situation no family should have to endure.
Collapse During Outdoor Workout
The reported workout included sprints, planks, push-ups, and bear crawls, according to The Athletic. Mayich collapsed during the outdoor team session and was later described as being in critical condition. Carey told The Arizona Republic that Mayich “was disoriented and struggled well before he collapsed” at the school’s track. That detail has drawn attention to how the workout was handled and what warning signs may have been present.
Hospitalized in Phoenix
Via Cheri Maday, Mayich remains hospitalized at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, after what was described as cardiac arrest during the team workout. Earlier reporting described the incident as a possible cardiac event. No other Arizona State hockey players were reported to have suffered heat-related illness or to have required hospitalization from the session.
ASU Says It Is Reviewing the Workout
Chris Fiscus, Arizona State University’s vice president of media relations, told The Arizona Republic in an Aug. 25 statement that the university “is reviewing everything surrounding the workout.” The Athletic also reported scrutiny around the former military man who conducted the workout with the athletes. At this stage, the public record still leaves serious questions about supervision, response, and whether the session should have continued once Mayich reportedly began struggling.

Prayers, Caution, and What Is Known
The source article also raises broader concerns about myocarditis and COVID shots, especially in young men, while also stating that there have been no reports linking Mayich’s collapse to COVID shots. That distinction matters. The known facts are painful enough: a young athlete collapsed during an outdoor team workout, remains in a coma, and his family is asking people to pray for him.
