French police outside the Élysée Palace during a corruption probe

Macron’s Palace Blocks Police Search

Police Meet a Closed Door

French financial and anti-corruption police showed up at the Élysée Palace on Tuesday and did not get in. Presidency staff said the building is covered by presidential immunity, which is a very convenient phrase when investigators are standing at the front gate with questions. The case is tied to an investigation opened in October 2025 into contracts linked to memorial ceremonies at the Panthéon. In other words, the state is looking into how the state spent money, and the state then reminded everyone that it is, in fact, the state.

Contracts Under the Microscope

Investigators are looking at possible favoritism, conflicts of interest, corruption, and influence peddling in how public contracts were awarded by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. One company, Shortcut Events, reportedly handled all of the ceremonies in question from 2002 to 2024, which is a very long run for a single contractor and a very short run for trust in procurement rules. The ceremonies are said to have totaled about €2 million, and police want to know whether support from the Élysée, the Ministry of Culture, or related offices helped the firm get around normal bidding rules.

Immunity, But Not Answers

The presidency said investigators were told they could receive staff documents that are not tied to the president’s official duties. National Financial Prosecutor Pascal Prache said the failed visit was part of the broader probe into memorial ceremony contracts. That leaves the usual modern-government problem: when a probe hits the palace door, everyone suddenly discovers the beauty of procedure, discretion, and a well-timed claim of immunity. France now has the familiar split-screen scene of anti-corruption police on one side and institutional self-protection on the other, with the public left to wonder which side needs the most explaining.
