Patel Turns Schiff’s Question Around

FBI Director Kash Patel and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff clashed during an annual FBI oversight hearing. Schiff asked Patel whether he still believed the mainstream media was “the most powerful enemy that the United States has ever seen.” Patel answered that Schiff’s colleagues had put his criticism on display through what he called lies, personal attacks, and baseless accusations. He then added a bit of dry trolling: “That’s a great picture. You should post it.” It was not exactly the warm, bipartisan exchange usually promised by official hearing rooms.

The Media Argument Gets Sharper

Schiff pressed Patel again, asking whether he considered the media a greater threat than Iran. Patel said the “lying media” was the most harmful institution in the United States. When Schiff asked whether Patel meant The New York Times, the discussion moved from media criticism to the long-running Russia collusion dispute. Patel asked Schiff whether he had ever found the Russia collusion evidence, pointing to an envelope Schiff had held up. He also raised the issue of illegal FISA warrants connected to Schiff’s time on the House Select Committee.

Schiff Does Not Offer an Answer

According to the source account, Schiff refused to say whether he had found evidence of Trump-Russia collusion. That left Patel pressing the point rather than letting the hearing drift into familiar political fog. Patel’s questions focused on two issues that have remained useful fuel for partisan arguments: the claims of collusion and the use of FISA warrants. The exchange showed how quickly an oversight hearing can become a replay of old disputes, complete with envelopes, accusations, and very little interest in changing anyone’s mind.

The Two Senators’ Previous Clash

This was not the first heated exchange between Patel and Schiff at the annual FBI Senate Judiciary oversight hearing. At the previous September hearing, Patel called Schiff “the biggest fraud to ever sit in the United States Senate,” a “disgrace” to the institution, and an “utter coward.” Patel also accused him of lying from his “perch” and putting on a show to raise money for what he called a charade. He finished by describing Schiff as a “political buffoon at best.” Civility, apparently, remains an optional feature of oversight season.
