Two Children Dead, One Child Survives
A 22-year-old Mandan, North Dakota mother, Kailey Renae Erhart, is in custody after police say she cut the throats of her three young children with a kitchen knife on August 6. Her five-month-old and three-year-old children died from their injuries. Her one-year-old son survived after extensive surgery, and family members later said doctors expected him to make a full physical recovery. Erhart faces two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, aggravated assault, terrorizing, and domestic violence charges. Her bond was set at $3 million cash. Erhart has not entered a plea and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Police Describe a Horrific Scene
According to a police affidavit reported by local outlets, officers were called to a home on South Frontier Trail after a report that a mother had stabbed her children. When officers entered, they reportedly found Erhart covered in blood and holding a kitchen knife to her own throat. Police say she dropped the weapon and told officers to kill her. Officers then followed a trail of blood into a bedroom, where all three children were found motionless on a bed with severe injuries around their necks. Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler described the scene as something “nobody should ever have to see.”
The Father’s Reported Video and the Moments Before
Investigators reportedly recovered video from the children’s father’s phone that showed Erhart holding one of the children while a pistol was at her hip. In that video, she allegedly told him, “Say goodbye to your kids.” The father reportedly wrestled the gun away, disassembled it, and scattered the pieces around the home. Police allege Erhart then got a kitchen knife, chased the children’s father and grandmother out of the residence, and locked herself inside with the three children. The five-month-old was pronounced dead at St. Alexius Medical Center that evening, and the three-year-old died at Sanford Health early the next morning.
Prior Warnings Raise Serious Questions
The affidavit also raises major questions about what officials may have known before the attack. According to the report, the children’s father had previously told mental-health services that Erhart had threatened to kill herself and the children. Erhart had also reportedly been committed to a mental-health facility sometime in the prior 12 to 18 months, was placed on medication, and was allegedly cleared to remain around the children. If those reports are accurate, the public deserves clear answers about who was notified, what risk review was done, and who decided the children could remain in that home. This is not about paperwork. It is about whether warning signs were missed when three small children needed protection.
Charges and a Separate National Case
Erhart now faces nine charges in all: two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, three counts of aggravated assault, and one misdemeanor count of domestic violence. District Judge Marina Spahr cited “the extreme violence in these alleged charges and the threat to the community, victims and children” when setting the $3 million cash bond, according to KFYR. The case has drawn comparisons to the Lindsay Clancy case in Massachusetts, where Clancy admitted strangling her three children in January 2023. Authorities have presented no evidence that Erhart copied or was inspired by Clancy, and that point matters in a case this serious.
