Hunter Biden and Patrick Byrne referenced in defamation case ruling

Judge Orders Patrick Byrne to Pay Hunter Biden $1.7 Million Over Iran Bribe Claims

Judge Awards Hunter Biden Punitive Damages

A federal judge in California has ordered former Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne to pay Hunter Biden $1.7 million in punitive damages in a defamation case. U.S. District Judge Stephen Wilson also awarded Biden $1 in nominal damages and about $35,000 in court sanctions. The case centered on Byrne’s claims that Hunter Biden had agreed to influence his father, then-President Joe Biden, to unfreeze $8 billion in Iranian assets in exchange for an $800 million bribe. The court found that Byrne’s statements were not protected opinion and showed an intent to damage Biden’s reputation.

The Claims Tied Biden To Iran And October 7

Byrne first made the allegations in a June 2023 interview. He later shared and promoted them on social media on October 8, 2023, one day after Hamas attacked Israel. According to Biden’s complaint, the clear message of Byrne’s posts was that Hunter Biden’s alleged corruption helped make the terror attacks possible. That charge carried grave weight, especially given the scale and horror of October 7. Courts tend to treat that kind of accusation as more than political roughhousing, even in an age when online debate often moves faster than facts.

Wilson Cited Repeated Posts And Missed Hearings

Judge Wilson wrote that the evidence showed “intentional misrepresentation with conscious disregard” for Biden’s rights. The ruling said Byrne did not simply make the claim once and move on. Instead, the judge noted that Byrne reposted the article across social media, urged followers to promote it, appeared on talk shows, repeated the same statements, defied court orders, and failed to appear at hearings. That pattern mattered. The legal system may be slow, costly, and wrapped in enough procedure to make a tax form look friendly, but judges still notice when a defendant ignores the court while repeating the disputed claim in public.

Biden Lawyer Calls It Complete Vindication

Hunter Biden’s attorney, Bryan Sullivan, said the ruling was “a complete vindication for Hunter Biden against the false statements made about him by Patrick Byrne.” Sullivan also said the court found Byrne had “no basis” to claim Biden had any involvement with Iran. Byrne, a longtime conservative activist and supporter of President Donald Trump, has not publicly responded to the ruling. The decision comes as Hunter Biden remains under political scrutiny over his foreign business dealings, including work tied to Ukraine, China, and the contents of his abandoned laptop. But in this case, the court focused on one specific set of statements and found them defamatory.
