Carville Looks at the DNC and Shrugs
Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville is not sounding thrilled with the Democratic National Committee these days. In a recent YouTube video, Carville reacted to reporting about trouble inside the party committee, including financial strain and concerns about current chairman Ken Martin’s grip on the job. The New York Times described Martin as under pressure and relying on a shrinking circle of trusted advisers. Carville summed up the DNC as “dysfunctional,” which is one of those rare Washington words that may actually mean what it says. He added that party leaders might still “get themselves together” and find a way to be relevant, but he did not sound like a man waiting by the mailbox for that plan.
His Suggested Fix Was David Hogg
Carville then tossed out a name that got attention: David Hogg, the former DNC vice chair and activist. “If David Hogg wants to take it over, I ain’t stopping you,” Carville said. That is not exactly a stirring trumpet call, but in political consultant language, it counts as a plan. The DNC has reportedly faced cash problems, and earlier reporting said the committee had put its headquarters building up as collateral to gain access to money. Some state parties have also been unhappy with the new primary schedule. In other words, the party’s national shop seems to be doing what large political machines often do best: holding meetings about a crisis while hoping the printer still has toner.
Hogg Does Not Seem Eager to Grab the Clipboard
Hogg responded publicly and made clear he does not want the DNC chairmanship. His answer matters because Carville’s comment was not made in a vacuum. Democrats have been arguing about what went wrong in 2024, what should change, and whether the party’s leadership has learned anything useful. Hogg’s reply suggested he sees plenty of problems but is not volunteering to become the person blamed for fixing them all. That is understandable. Taking over a struggling national committee is like agreeing to captain a ship after the crew has already sold the lifeboats for conference snacks.
The Autopsy Fight Is Still Open
Another post circulating online highlighted complaints about the DNC’s handling of the 2024 loss, including claims that Democrats have not fully dealt with issues such as inflation, President Biden’s age, Gaza, or broader voter rejection. The exact state of the party’s finances and internal review is still being argued in public, but the larger point is hard to miss. Democrats are still fighting over whether their problem is messaging, leadership, ideology, or all of the above wearing the same lanyard. For Republicans, the scene is familiar: a party that spent years warning about chaos now appears to be holding a seminar in it.
