Harmeet Dhillon has resigned as the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, Fox News reported Thursday. Her departure follows Republican losses in the House and Senate, but her account of the timing adds a detail worth reading before the political spin machine gets warmed up.

Dhillon told Fox News she had wanted to quit three weeks earlier. White House adviser Susie Wiles asked her to wait until after the midterm elections. According to the report, Dhillon plans to return to California and resume work in private practice.

The Gateway Pundit described her as the first Justice Department official to resign since Tuesday night’s midterm loss. That puts her departure in the election’s immediate aftermath, though her stated timeline places her desire to leave before voters delivered that result. Timing matters, even when Washington would prefer a tidier storyline.

Dhillon, who assumed office in April 2025, pointed to her work against illegal diversity, equity and inclusion policies and her defense of women’s and girls’ sports in her farewell statement.

“Serving my country as AAG for Civil Rights has been the honor of a lifetime. We ushered in the downfall of illegal DEI, we fought to protect women and girls’ sports, and so much more. I want to thank President Trump for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to what’s next!”

Those were substantive priorities, not just decorative language for a government farewell. Defending equal treatment and protecting women’s sports should hardly require a political brawl, yet here we are. In the leadup to the elections, Dhillon also defended the administration’s investigation into noncitizen voters.

Her resignation follows another development: a grand jury declined last week to indict Cassidy Hutchinson. The Justice Department had sought an indictment over allegations that she lied to Congress. Dhillon spearheaded that investigation.

Hutchinson testified in June 2022 that President Trump entered the presidential vehicle after his January 6 speech at the Ellipse believing he would be driven to the Capitol. The grand jury’s decision did not produce the indictment the department sought. The source does not establish that outcome as the reason for Dhillon’s resignation.

Attorney General Todd Blanche accepted her departure and issued this statement:

“Today, I accepted the resignation of Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who led the Civil Rights Division with conviction the past 18 months. She has defended the civil liberties of every American and enforced the law without fear or favor. The Department is grateful for her dedicated public service, and we wish her every success in her future endeavors.”
