Leavitt Moves From the Podium to an Outside Role
President Trump announced Wednesday that Karoline Leavitt will leave her job as White House press secretary to spend more time with her young children. She will remain in Trump’s orbit as one of his top outside advisers. Leavitt made history as the youngest person to hold the press secretary post. She was 27 when she took the role last year. She also has two young children, including a daughter born in May. In Washington, leaving a high-profile job for family reasons is almost treated like a foreign language, so expect the usual translation errors from the political class.
Habba and Boyle Are the Early Names to Watch
Hours after Trump’s announcement, The New York Post reported that two early front-runners had emerged: Alina Habba and Matthew Boyle. Habba served as one of Trump’s defense lawyers and became known for forceful television appearances on his behalf. She also briefly worked in the West Wing as a counselor to the president before Trump appointed her as the top prosecutor in New Jersey. Boyle is the Washington bureau chief for Breitbart and is well known inside conservative media. According to the Post, Trump knows Boyle by name and has given him many interviews, including a recent Oval Office sit-down.
The Briefing Room May Not Be Getting Quieter
If anyone expected the White House briefing room to become a soothing spa for corporate media nerves, Habba and Boyle do not exactly fit that brochure. Both are known as strong defenders of Trump, and both have taken sharp aim at the left and its media allies. The Post noted that Boyle’s investigative background and close coverage of the Trump movement could help him handle public relations fights. Habba, meanwhile, built her national profile by defending Trump in front of cameras when the political and legal pressure was at full blast.
Other Possibilities Are Floating Around
The Post also listed several other names said to be in the mix, including Taylor Budowich, Katie Miller, Anna Kelly, and Monica Crowley. Budowich previously served as White House deputy chief of staff for communications and personnel. Miller is a former aide to Elon Musk at DOGE and is married to deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller. Kelly is the principal deputy press secretary, and Crowley serves as U.S. chief of protocol. Still, the report described Habba and Boyle as the more likely possibilities, which means the Washington guessing game has begun, complete with anonymous sources and freshly polished tea leaves.
