Jury hands down death sentence
A Tarrant County jury on Tuesday sentenced Tanner Horner to death by lethal injection for the 2022 kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand. Horner had already pleaded guilty to capital murder just before his trial began last month, which moved the case straight into the punishment phase. In a justice system famous for paperwork, hearings, and enough procedural steps to wear out a courthouse printer, the jury still reached the harshest penalty allowed under Texas law.
What prosecutors said happened
Prosecutors said Horner abducted Athena while he was making a FedEx delivery to her home in Paradise, Texas, in late 2022. They told the jury that Horner’s DNA was found in places where it should not have been found on a 7-year-old girl. The court also heard graphic video and audio from Athena’s final moments, evidence prosecutors used to argue for the death penalty. CBS News reported that the defense responded with expert testimony about Horner’s mental health and medical history, along with testimony from his mother and grandmother about his childhood. That is the usual courtroom tug of war, where one side lays out the crime and the other side asks the jury to look at the broken parts that came before it.
A family forced to speak the unspeakable
Athena’s uncle, Elijah Strand, gave an emotional impact statement in court. He said Athena had dreams she would never chase, birthdays she would never celebrate, and a life she would never get to live because of Horner’s actions. He told Horner that he did not just take a life, but destroyed a family and caused pain that would last for generations. Elijah Strand also said Horner would be judged by God and would become a footnote in Athena’s story, while her name would be remembered and celebrated. The family’s words made clear what no legal filing can fully capture: this was not an abstract case, but a child’s life cut short and a family left carrying the weight of it.
