A survey of embalmers raises hard questions
A newly published peer-reviewed study in the International Journal of Innovative Research in Medical Science reports that many embalmers and funeral directors have observed unusual white or off-white fibrous structures in the veins and arteries of deceased people. The study was led by retired U.S. Air Force Major Thomas F. Haviland, a data analyst and mathematician, with independent researchers Lauro Kasner and Dr. Daniel Santiago, a Doctor of Pharmacy. The authors used four annual anonymous surveys from 2022 through 2025, targeting active embalmers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The topic is serious, and the families of the deceased deserve careful answers, not slogans, panic, or institutional shoulder-shrugging.
What embalmers said they saw
The researchers described the reported structures as large, tough, rubbery, white or off-white fibrous material found during embalming. Respondents said these were different from traditional postmortem clots, often called chicken-fat or currant-jelly clots. According to the study, some structures were several inches long, while others were reported to be more than a foot long and, in some cases, nearly the length of a limb. Across 808 total survey responses, the share of embalmers reporting that they had seen the structures ranged from 66 percent to 83 percent, depending on the survey year. When the four years were combined, 75.2 percent of respondents said they had observed them, and the authors estimated the structures appeared in 23.4 percent of embalmed bodies.
The timeline is why this is drawing attention
The study says reports of these structures rose sharply around the COVID era. Among embalmers who said they had seen the structures, only 14 to 17 percent reported seeing them in 2018 or 2019. That figure rose to 37 percent in 2020 and reached 80 percent in 2021, according to the authors. The timing overlaps with the global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, which is why the study is receiving attention from critics of federal health agencies. Still, overlap is not proof of cause. The researchers themselves called for further work by forensic pathologists and biomedical experts to examine the material directly and determine what it is, where it came from, and whether any public health factor is involved.
