Fauci Texts Cite Theoretical Miscarriage Risk After Second COVID Shot

Senators Release Fauci Phone Texts

Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul released the first batch of text messages from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s COVID-era iPhone on Monday. The release comes as the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations continues looking into the federal government’s handling of the pandemic and Fauci’s prior testimony to Congress. Last month, the subcommittee said it had obtained a copy of Fauci’s phone from HHS. Johnson said the device may answer questions Fauci did not answer at a recent hearing. The first released messages are from January 2021 and involve Fauci, then-CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, and Dr. Vivek Murthy, who later served as President Joe Biden’s surgeon general.

The Pregnancy Question Inside the Messages

According to the released texts, Murthy asked whether there was any reason to favor COVID vaccination earlier or later in pregnancy. He also asked whether officials had seen evidence of adverse outcomes among pregnant women who had already been vaccinated. Fauci replied that there were “no data or theoretical reason” to think vaccination earlier in pregnancy should be preferred over later vaccination. He also addressed concerns that an mRNA vaccine could alter a person’s genes, calling that a misconception. The key issue in the newly highlighted exchange is not public messaging. It is what top health officials were privately weighing while guidance for the public was still being shaped.

Fauci Mentioned a Theoretical First-Trimester Risk

Fox News reported that Fauci privately discussed concerns about COVID-19 mRNA vaccines for pregnant women in January 2021. In the messages, Fauci said many people experience significant cytokine-related symptoms and fever after a second dose. He then wrote that such a reaction “theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester,” according to the documents released by Johnson and Paul. Johnson highlighted that quote in announcing the release. The Gateway Pundit also pointed back to its prior reporting from 2022 on VAERS data and miscarriage and stillbirth reports after the mRNA rollout. As always with government health data, the argument will turn on what officials knew, what they believed, and what they told the public.

What the Release Does and Does Not Show

The released texts show Fauci raising a theoretical concern tied to fever and immune reactions after a second mRNA dose during the first trimester. They also show Murthy asking for clarity on timing during pregnancy and adverse outcomes already observed. The messages do not, by themselves, settle every medical question about causation, risk levels, or later guidance. They do, however, add a record of private discussion among senior public health officials at a time when Americans were being asked to trust federal agencies during a fast-moving crisis. For families affected by miscarriage, the subject deserves care, honesty, and complete records, not spin polished smooth by the public health communications machine.
