Guilty Pleas in the GOP Office Vandalism Case
Brock McNerney, 72, and Moisette McNerney, 69, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor criminal damage to property and criminal defacement of property charges tied to vandalism at the Republicans of Wheeling Township headquarters. The office, located at 909 E. Rand Road, had been targeted in January after a prior vandalism incident in December. Surveillance cameras installed after the earlier damage reportedly captured the couple marking the office windows with permanent marker. The damage included swastikas and profanities, including markings placed over a portrait of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was born in Arlington Heights and had once volunteered at the local GOP office while attending Wheeling High School.
What the Court Ordered
Cook County Judge Thomas Newinski sentenced the couple to 18 months of court supervision, 100 hours of community service, a $100 fine, and court costs. The judge also ordered them to write an apology letter to the Wheeling Township Republican organization. Their defense attorney, Jason Stevens, said his clients accepted responsibility and noted they had no prior criminal record. The charges remained misdemeanors, and prosecutors did not bring hate crime enhancements, despite the reported use of Nazi symbols against a political organization and the targeting of a display honoring Kirk.
Why Republicans Say the Case Shows a Double Standard
Republican members and supporters in the area argue the case fits a wider pattern in Illinois, where political vandalism is not always treated the same way depending on who is on the receiving end. They point to other cases in Cook and Lake Counties where defendants accused of conduct involving hate symbols faced felony hate crime charges. In this case, the symbols were swastikas, the target was a Republican office, and the portrait was tied to Kirk, yet the legal result was court supervision, community service, court costs, and a $100 fine. That contrast is why critics see not just leniency, but a justice system with very selective eyesight.
Victim Impact Statement Described Fear and Security Costs
The Republicans of Wheeling Township submitted a victim impact statement saying the vandalism caused more than cleanup bills. Members said they feel less safe keeping open office hours in a location the group has used for more than two decades. Some supporters have reportedly become less willing to put up yard signs because they fear their homes could be targeted. One Jewish member described being “saddened and horrified.” Others described fear of retaliation, trouble recruiting new volunteers, added police patrols, and new security expenses. The statement also said the group had asked the court to consider a public written apology and, instead of restitution to the organization, a donation in Kirk’s honor to Turning Point USA, the group he founded.
Further Incidents Were Reported After the Plea Case Began
The organization said the January vandalism did not end the problem. According to the report, ROWT recorded four separate acts of defacement in June alone, including two involving sputum placed on Kirk’s face and others involving offensive notes. A similar note was reported in April. The victim impact statement also cited a Facebook comment posted the same morning that appeared to praise the original vandalism while saying the accused had “let us all down by using a sharpie and not using fire.” Four days after the January incident, the same individuals were reportedly seen at a “No Kings” rally holding similar hateful symbols, though not aimed at themselves. Five months later, the group said it still had not received an apology.
