Butler County election results show a close Pennsylvania House special election

Democrat Leads by 88 Votes in Trump +18 Pennsylvania House Seat

A Republican Seat Suddenly Looks Blue

Democrat Brandon Dukes appears to have flipped Pennsylvania’s 12th Legislative District in Tuesday’s special election, defeating Republican Scott Timko by just 88 votes in unofficial Butler County returns. Dukes received 8,434 votes, while Timko received 8,346, with 35 write-in votes. All 27 precincts reported, and turnout was 31.9 percent, with 16,825 ballots cast out of 52,745 registered voters. The result is not yet certified, so the final word has not been written. Still, the unofficial count is a serious warning sign for Pennsylvania Republicans in a district President Donald Trump carried by 18.4 points in 2024.

Mail Ballots Made the Difference

The split between Election Day voting and mail voting tells the main story. Timko won the Election Day vote, 6,559 to 4,885, giving Republicans a 1,674-vote edge. Dukes then erased that lead through mail voting, winning that category 3,549 to 1,787, a Democratic advantage of 1,762 votes. According to Cranberry Eagle reporting cited in the source, 73 provisional ballots remain outstanding. Butler County Elections Director Chantell McCurdy said officials were consulting attorneys about whether Pennsylvania’s automatic recount provision applies to this special election.

A District With a Long Republican Record

The 12th Legislative District covers parts of southwestern Butler County, including Cranberry Township, Adams Township, Jackson Township, Zelienople, Mars, and Evans City. The seat had been held by Republicans for nearly three decades, first under longtime conservative Daryl Metcalfe and later by Stephenie Scialabba. Scialabba resigned effective March 31, citing family obligations, which triggered the special election to fill the remainder of the term. Republicans also have a voter-registration advantage in the district, with roughly 53 percent registered Republican versus 30 percent Democrat.

Butler County’s Painful Place in 2024

The location adds weight to the result. Butler County was the site of the July 13, 2024 campaign rally where a would-be assassin nearly killed President Trump. Trump survived after a bullet grazed his ear. Firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed while shielding his family, and others were wounded. That tragedy remains a solemn part of the county’s recent history. Trump later dominated the area in the 2024 election, which makes this special-election result even more striking for Republicans who expected a safer margin in the district.

The Candidates Will Meet Again

Dukes, a Cranberry resident and commercial loan administrator, called the result historic, saying, “We just flipped a Trump +18 seat, and we flipped a red seat that’s been red for almost 30 years.” Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro also moved quickly to frame the outcome as part of a wider political message, saying, “Pennsylvanians are rising up and using their power to combat the chaos, cruelty, and corruption — and we’re not slowing down.” Timko, a retired Air Force captain, commercial pilot, and former small-business owner, campaigned on energy development, lower taxes, school choice, gun rights, and tighter enforcement against illegal immigration. Dukes supported a higher minimum wage, more public-school funding, same-day voter registration, and early in-person voting, while opposing school-choice policies and calling for heavy state regulation of data-center development. Both candidates are set to face each other again in the November 3 general election for the full two-year term.
