CNN Loses a Saturday Travel Slot
The White House removed CNN from the television pool for President Donald Trump’s Saturday flight to Knoxville, where he is scheduled to attend Tennessee-Texas. Real America’s Voice and LindellTV stepped in to fill the gap, according to the account. The pool rotation matters because the assigned network records video that other media outlets may use. CNN correspondent Alayna Treene announced the change while appearing with Anderson Cooper. She said the White House was preventing CNN from carrying out its television duties and that it was unclear what would happen to pool coverage. Friday night’s guidance left CNN off the plane. A routine camera assignment has become another episode in the press corps’ ongoing access fight.
CNN Frames Its Own Access Fight as Breaking News
Treene told Cooper that an outside lawyer representing CNN, Politico, and MS NOW had argued earlier that restored access included the White House pool. She said the network was being singled out. CNN later offered a different framing, writing that no outlet was listed as a replacement and that there would therefore be no television pool coverage for the trip. The network called the move the latest salvo against CNN and the broader White House press corps. So the dispute now has two competing descriptions: one says alternative outlets filled the opening, while the other emphasizes that the official note did not name a replacement. News organizations rarely miss a chance to turn their own staffing memo into breaking news.
The Court Order Had Limits
Last week, President Trump banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House complex, accusing them of “FICTION and LIES.” The Secret Service took away their credentials, and the three outlets filed a lawsuit. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a 14-day restraining order on Thursday restoring those credentials, saying the situation appeared to raise a due-process problem. The order covered the White House complex, but it did not settle access to Air Force One or the television pool rotation. CNN had also already been removed from United Nations General Assembly pool duty. Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC declined to fill that assignment, and Fox bureau chief Bryan Boughton said there would be no replacement pool.
Alternative Outlets Fill the Gap
Real America’s Voice and LindellTV then moved into the opening. RAV said it would provide every outlet with a free, clean feed of White House and travel-pool video. Parker Sigg, the outlet’s vice president, argued that the move showed the free press was alive rather than under threat, and said RAV would provide the feed even to media outlets it considers “fake news.” RAV and LindellTV had also covered Xi Jinping’s arrival at the White House and Joint Base Andrews when the legacy pool sat out. The fight is now over more than who gets a seat on the plane. It is also a contest over who controls the camera, the feed, and the story afterward.
