CNN Analyst Questions the Progress of Harris’ Campaign

In a recent development that could potentially dampen the spirits of Democrats, CNN’s political analyst Harry Enten delivered an analysis suggesting that the perceived momentum of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race may not be as strong as it appears. Despite receiving endorsements from prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, Enten believes that Harris’s popularity surge might not be as significant.

Enten’s Take: A Closer Look at Polling Data

During his segment on CNN, Enten delved into the subtleties of recent polling data – information that could prove vital as the Democratic Party gears up for what many anticipate to be a Harris nomination. “I think there’s all this talk of all this Harris momentum. Maybe there’s a slight bit of momentum, but I would argue it’s actually a little bit smaller than folks think,” stated Enten.

His analysis revealed that before Biden stepped aside, Trump was leading by two points over Harris. However, when examining the latest polls this week, Enten observed that Trump is now leading by one point over Harris. According to Enten, this minor shift in polling suggests that the change in candidates might have more impact than any genuine momentum for Harris against Trump.

Furthermore, he clarified that the “massive change” is essentially due to a change in candidates. Before Biden withdrew from the race, he was trailing by six points in polls where Harris was only behind by two points. This indicates that the shift is more from Biden to Harris rather than any significant movement on part of Harris herself.

Harris’ “Honeymoon” Period in Polls

As the first Black female to lead a major party ticket, Harris has enjoyed a “honeymoon” period in polls as she has narrowed down her race against President Trump and rallied significant figures of the Democratic Party behind her candidacy. So far, no challenger has emerged, positioning Harris on a smooth path to a formal nomination at the party’s convention in Chicago next month.

Obama, who had left the possibility of supporting a “blitz primary” open for days, ultimately shut that door and solidified his support for Harris’s candidacy.

Persistent Challenges for Harris

Although there has been a shift towards Harris from Biden among Democratic voters, the overall dynamics of the race against Trump may not have altered as dramatically as some Democrat optimists might wish.

National polls conducted since Biden’s departure continue to show that Trump maintains a lead over Harris, with even larger leads in some of the most fiercely contested battleground states of the 2024 cycle.

The transition has disrupted Republicans’ line of attack which had been tailored to exploit Biden’s economic weaknesses and foreign policy deficiencies, along with growing evidence of his physical and mental decline in office. With Harris stepping in, this strategy is now being re-evaluated as Republicans test messages about her failures as a border czar, her tenure as California’s former attorney general, and her tendency to make “weird” or uninformed statements.

As Democrats rally around Harris with strategic moves underway and endorsements from the party rolling in, the real challenge will commence in the coming months. This period will be crucial for both Harris and the Democratic Party as they finalize their ticket and refine their strategy moving forward.
