A campaign stop for Democrat Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton at the Canfield Fair near Youngstown quickly became a political fire drill after reports said an armed man lunged into a tent and injured multiple people. The man was later identified as Patrick Havas of Ohio. According to the source report, Havas was charged with two counts of assault for knocking over two elderly people, along with one count of disorderly conduct. That is serious enough without the usual campaign-season fog machine turning every confusing moment into a made-for-TV crisis.
Campaign Statement Raised the Temperature
Acton’s campaign posted a statement saying that “an armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton, injuring multiple people,” and added that Acton and Eric were grateful for law enforcement and praying for those injured. The statement also said this kind of violence has no place in Ohio and referred to “chaos, hate and vitriol.” Those are strong words. The problem, based on later details cited in the report, is that the incident was not an attack on Acton herself. Political messaging, once again, appears to have sprinted ahead of the facts like it had a press deadline and no adult supervision.
Law Enforcement Account Looked Different
The later account says Havas did not lunge at Acton. Instead, he allegedly pushed through the crowd in the tent to get closer or ask questions, knocking over two audience members in the process. The report says he was carrying two guns, but they were holstered, he had a permit to carry in Ohio, and he did not draw either weapon. Police reportedly found the guns only after he was arrested. The source also states that Acton was not touched, injured, or threatened. The New York Times was cited as reporting that law enforcement officials said there was no assassination attempt, and that the local sheriff described the case as an aggressive push through a crowd that led to misdemeanor assault charges.
The Media Pile-On Meets the Update
Laura Loomer weighed in by calling the broader portrayal “fake news,” saying the man had already been released with no bail and had not pulled a gun. The Gateway Pundit also accused CBS News of running with the original framing and said the report needed to be updated. Whatever one thinks of the messengers, the central point is plain: if police say there was no assassination attempt, no gun drawn, and no direct threat to Acton, then newsrooms and campaigns should correct the record quickly. Sadly, corrections rarely travel first class. They usually ride coach, in the back, next to the printer that has been out of toner since 2019.
