Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed appeared Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper to discuss his primary win and how he plans to unite his party. That was the official topic, at least. Then Tapper brought up a Truth Social post from President Trump, and the interview took the well-worn cable-news exit ramp from policy into personal shots. Washington may talk endlessly about “democracy,” but it still cannot resist a marriage jab when one wanders into the studio wearing a nametag.
The Post That Set It Off
Trump’s post compared two photos. One showed Trump standing beside First Lady Melania Trump. The other showed El-Sayed with his wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku, who was wearing a hijab, at a restaurant. Trump captioned the comparison, “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.” The point was not subtle, which is usually the point of social media. It was a political contrast delivered with all the delicacy of a campaign flyer taped to a brick.
El-Sayed Fires Back
Asked about the post, El-Sayed answered by turning the focus to Trump’s marriage. “Actually, Sarah and I like each other. I don’t know about the First Lady and the President, but, from what I have heard, it’s a bit of a rocky road,” he told Tapper. That moved the discussion from Trump’s post to El-Sayed’s speculation about a private relationship. Tapper did not challenge the claim during the exchange, according to the clip shared online. Cable news, ever the referee, sometimes seems to leave the whistle in the glove box.
